Throwback: A New Meaning to Street Art

On our first journey thoughout the streets of Florence we noticed something peculiar. Some of the traffic signs had been hijacked by various little black men acting out scenes depending on the particular sign. We knew we had stumbled upon some sort of popular new art, but were not sure about the particulares.

After a couple of google searches, it appears that these are works of art by the French artist Clet Abraham (usually known as Clet). Clet has spent the last 20 years living in Italy and started his campagin to change the street sign culture of Florence in the summer of 2010 by adding stickers upon the already existing signs. Although some protest to his work, the city has as a whole accepted his work, especially with its rising tourist fame.

Clet, himself, claims: “Street art, when done well, is a gift to the city and its residents”.
